What is SMP?

Everything You Need to Know about
Scalp Micropigmentation

As we introduce Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) at Anh’s Artistry, I wanted to take the time to explain what this treatment is, who it’s for, and why it has become one of the most effective non-surgical hair loss solutions available today.

SMP is suitable for all genders and ages, offering a natural looking solution for hair loss, thinning hair, scarring, and density concerns. Whether you’re experiencing early hairline recession, advanced hair loss, or want to enhance the appearance of fuller hair, SMP can be a transformative option.

This guide covers everything you need to know about scalp micropigmentation, including the most frequently asked questions clients ask before committing to treatment. My goal is to help you feel informed, confident, and supported before taking the next step.

Is SMP the same as a regular tattoo?

No — scalp micropigmentation is not the same as a traditional tattoo. This is one of the most important distinctions to understand. Even highly skilled tattoo artists can create poor results if SMP is performed incorrectly. When pigment is placed too deeply into the skin, it can migrate and discolour over time (See example below).

The left side is my client who had a tattoo artist cover his ‘problem areas’ - The right is where we tried to neutralise the patches before SMP.

Note: This does not always guarantee full coverage but can be blended with SMP for best results. It was either that or laser removal.

Unlike traditional tattoos, which penetrate deeper layers of the skin, SMP is a cosmetic tattooing technique designed to sit in the upper layer of the skin and fade gradually. Using specialised needles and pigments formulated specifically for scalp micropigmentation, SMP is applied one impression at a time to replicate thousands of natural-looking hair follicles — often 30,000+ impressions for full scalp coverage.

Too deep means the pigment will stay, migrate and discolour in the skin. The perfect depth will guarantee the most natural and long lasting results.

Will SMP help my hair grow back?

Scalp micropigmentation does not regrow hair. While the treatment may stimulate blood flow similarly to microneedling, SMP is not a hair growth treatment. Instead, it camouflages hair loss by recreating the appearance of hair follicles and blending seamlessly with your existing hair for a fuller, denser look.

SMP is for all ages and gender.

Hair length, maintenance & lifestyle after SMP

For hairline restoration or moderate to advanced hair loss, keeping the hair very short provides the most realistic scalp micropigmentation results. Growing patchy hair over SMP will appear uneven and unnatural.

For SMP density treatments, where pigment is placed between existing hair, your hair length can usually remain the same and cover the problem areas. Depending on the extent of thinning, small styling adjustments may be recommended to enhance the final result. The goal is always natural, low-maintenance results that suit your lifestyle.

Shaved-look maintenance:

Using a rotary electric shaver or zero clipper every 1–2 days is ideal. This takes about a minute, reduces skin irritation, and maintains a natural “5 o’clock shadow” look (0–0.5mm).

How many SMP sessions will I need?

Most scalp micropigmentation treatments require 2–4 sessions, depending on the extent of hair loss, skin type, healing response, and aftercare.

• Each session lasts 2–5 hours

• Sessions are spaced 7–14 days apart

• The final refinement session is completed 3–4 weeks after the last session, once pigment has settled

Cost of Scalp Micropigmentation in Melbourne

The cost of SMP in Melbourne depends on the area treated and is structured into clear categories:

Hair Loss Scale: Medium 1-3, Advanced 4-7

Hairline SMP treatments: $800 – $1,500

SMP density treatments:

• Half head: $1,800

• Full head: $2,500

Shaved scalp SMP:

• Medium hair loss: $3,000

• Advanced hair loss: $4,500

All pricing includes 3–4 SMP sessions. Compared to hair transplant surgery, which can cost $8,000–$20,000 with no guaranteed results, scalp micropigmentation is a far more affordable and predictable solution with minimal ongoing maintenance.

Will I need SMP touch-ups?

Some clients may require an SMP touch-up, while others maintain their results for many years. Skin type, sun exposure, and how your body metabolises pigment all affect longevity. Most clients only require a touch-up every 3–4 years if needed. Protecting the scalp with sunscreen helps extend results.

Will SMP match my hair colour?

Yes. SMP pigments are carefully selected to match your natural hair colour. When hair is cut close to the scalp, all hair colours appear as shades of grey. SMP recreates depth and shadow, producing realistic results that age naturally over time.

Are SMP pigments safe?

At Anh’s Artistry, we use carbon-based, water-based pigments formulated specifically for scalp micropigmentation. These pigments are safe, stable, and designed to produce crisp, natural follicle impressions. Traditional tattoo inks are not used.

Does scalp micropigmentation hurt?

Most clients rate the pain between 0–2 out of 10. Because SMP does not penetrate deeply, there is minimal discomfort and little to no bleeding during treatment.

Who is a good candidate for SMP?

Scalp micropigmentation may be right for you if you:

• Have a receding hairline or pattern hair loss

• Experience thinning hair due to genetics

• Want to enhance density after a hair transplant

• Have scars from injury or surgery

• Wear a hairpiece or wig

• Are seeking an alternative to ongoing hair loss medications

If you’re considering scalp micropigmentation, you’re welcome to book a phone or in-person consultation to find out if SMP is right for you. - Hope to hear from you soon and make all your 99 problems go away <3
